Valdez Bankruptcy Records Overview
Valdez Bankruptcy Court Filing Location
Valdez bankruptcy filings go to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Alaska, located in Anchorage at 605 W. 4th Ave., Suite 138, Anchorage, AK 99501. The clerk's number is (907) 271-2655. Toll free is (800) 859-8059. Office hours run Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Valdez sits at the end of the Richardson Highway on Prince William Sound in the Chugach Census Area. The city is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. It's a long drive to Anchorage, so most Valdez residents file by mail or through the eSR electronic portal. Mail is accepted at the Anchorage courthouse address. Never send cash by mail. Use a money order or cashier's check payable to the Clerk of Court.
The free eSR system at the court's eSR page lets you prepare and submit a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 petition from home. The portal works 24 hours a day. It saves your data between sessions, but you must log in at least once every 45 days to keep your session alive. You'll need Adobe Reader, a working email address, and a printer.
Note: Valdez has no local bankruptcy filing office, so the eSR online portal and mail submission are the two most practical options for most residents.

How to Search Valdez Bankruptcy Dockets
The two main tools for searching federal bankruptcy records are PACER and McVCIS. PACER is the federal online database. Create a free account at pacer.uscourts.gov or call (800) 676-6856. Once in, search by debtor name, case number, Social Security number (for personal cases), or attorney. Files cost $0.10 per page, capped at $3 per document. If your total charges stay under $30 in a quarter, the fee is waived entirely.
McVCIS is a free voice line available any time of day. Call 1-866-222-8029 toll free or (907) 271-2658 locally. The system reads back basic case information: debtor name, case number, trustee assignment, filing date, and status. No account is required. It's the quickest way for Valdez residents to check on a case without paying anything.
Note: PACER quarterly fees under $30 are waived automatically, making it free for most occasional searchers.
Steps to File Bankruptcy from Valdez
There are a few things to do before you file. First, complete a credit counseling course from an agency approved by the U.S. Trustee. The course must be done within 180 days before filing. A list of approved agencies is at justice.gov. Most courses are available online and take one to two hours. Valdez residents can complete them from home.
The filing fees are $338 for Chapter 7 and $313 for Chapter 13. You can request installment payments by filing Official Form 103A. If your income is low enough, you can ask for a fee waiver using Official Form 103B for Chapter 7 cases only.
After your debts are discharged, a second course called debtor education is required before the court issues your discharge order. This course is also available online from approved providers. Keep your completion certificate safe. The court will ask for proof before closing the case.
Alaska Exemptions for Valdez Bankruptcy Filers
Alaska state exemptions under AS 09.38.010 through AS 09.38.510 protect key property from your creditors when you file. The homestead exemption is $72,900. It covers equity in your home or land. Your Permanent Fund Dividend is exempt up to $1,500 per person.
To use Alaska exemptions you must have lived in Alaska for at least 730 days before filing. This is the requirement under 11 U.S.C. § 522(b)(3). Venue under 28 U.S.C. § 1408 also requires Alaska to be your domicile for the 180 days before filing. Valdez is a city where some workers stay for a season or a year. If you've lived here under two years, check your dates carefully before you choose Alaska exemptions.
The Alaska Trust Act under AS 34.40.110 is a separate law that may be relevant if a self-settled trust is involved. The Alaska Public Records Act, AS 40.25, governs access to records held by the state and local government.
