How to Search North Lakes Bankruptcy Records
PACER is the federal database for bankruptcy records. Set up a free account at pacer.uscourts.gov or by calling (800) 676-6856. Search by debtor name, case number, or attorney name. Each page of output costs $0.10, capped at $3 per document. Quarterly bills under $30 are waived, so occasional searchers often pay nothing. Electronic records go back to January 2000. The Alaska Bankruptcy Court PACER guide has local tips for first-time users.
For a free phone option, use the McVCIS line: 1-866-222-8029 toll free or (907) 271-2658 locally. There's also an Alaska-specific toll free line at 1-888-878-3110. McVCIS reads back case status, debtor name, trustee, and filing date. No account is required. Works 24 hours a day.
Alaska Exemptions That Apply to North Lakes Cases
Alaska law under AS 09.38.010 through AS 09.38.510 protects several types of property in bankruptcy. The homestead exemption is $72,900. That's a meaningful protection for North Lakes homeowners. The vehicle exemption is $4,050. Tools used in your trade or work are exempt up to $3,780. Household goods, clothing, and books together have a combined limit of $4,050. Your Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend is exempt up to $1,500 per person.
Alaska exemptions require 730 days of state residency before you file, per 11 U.S.C. § 522(b)(3). Under 28 U.S.C. § 1408, Alaska must be your domicile for the 180 days before filing. Both rules are important if you moved to North Lakes in the past two years. List your exemptions on Schedule C in your petition. They are not automatic.
Note: If you don't meet Alaska's 730-day residency rule, you may need to use the federal exemptions or those from your prior home state, which can be significantly lower.
Filing Bankruptcy from North Lakes
Before filing, complete a credit counseling course within 180 days. Use an approved agency from the list at justice.gov. Online courses are available and run about one to two hours. After discharge, a debtor education course is also required. Both need to be from U.S. Trustee-approved providers.
Chapter 7 costs $338. Chapter 13 is $313. Request installment payments on Form 103A or a fee waiver on Form 103B for Chapter 7. All documents need original signatures. The eSR system is the easiest option for most do-it-yourself filers in the North Lakes area.
